What's your Calling & How to Hear it
We talk about calling like it’s something we can catch. Like we are a child running around this world with a net in our hands trying to reach that beautiful butterfly that seems to always be flying just out of reach. They seem so perfect with their coloring. A mixture of harsh lines representing harsh truths and fading colors showing promises in imperfections. Once we get just a little bit closer they seem to fly away taking our hope of knowing with it.
We long for that knowledge. The truth that our past pain will not be a waste. The truth of why we are where we are & the truth of where we are meant to go next.
Before I go forward I want to clarify some identities. We talk about purpose and calling like they are the same but their identities are often confused. I read this analogy recently and it explains their differences perfectly. Picture all the utensils in your kitchen. They all hold the same purpose: to make and serve food. But when we look at each specific tool like a knife or a spoon or a whisk, each one has it’s own calling. A knife to cut, a spoon to serve and a whisk to mix. In the end they all reach the same result, a happy full human.
We all have the same purpose: to know God, love Him & bring Him glory.
However our callings are all uniquely our own.
A calling is simply a call. Like the ringing of a phone we have the chance to answer but it’s not just one call, it’s thousands over and over again. & you know what God is saying on the line?
"Are you going to be obedient to me, my dear child? Are you going to love when it’s hard and trust when you can’t see what I am doing?”
We tend to romanticize the call making it seem like it’s easy to pick up the phone. Sometimes it is. Sometimes the call is simply to do something we enjoy or natural to us. Then sometimes it is worse than dieting or going to the dentist and we don’t give it our all. We can even become envious of others & their phone conversations with God. We think they made it look so easy! Why can’t I hear the phone ringing! When the reality of their answer started with a “God, no”. We don't know all their story by seeing the end result.
Our callings all start at the same place. This is to simply look at God’s face everyday, feel the full weight of his identity & ours made new in Him, then face the world with unexplainable joy, love & grace.
After this, it gets a little more complicated, a little more adventurous!
Luke 16:10 says "If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities.” New Living Translation
So if we are faithful to meet with God, know Him & share Him then there is ALWAYS MORE my friend!
Now, how do you hear the ringing, you ask? It all depends on your heart!
Are you listening to God?
I’m going to be honest this is not my strongest place. The quiet stillness is where I get restless. I always need something to do so something is always on my mind making listening to God’s still quiet voice HARD. There are so many different ways to listen to God as simple as reading the Bible and praying! Sometimes we need a check because in crazy seasons we can overlook the simple daily conversations we should be having with God. If we aren’t listening, how can we hear our callings?
Are you obeying God?
Another REALLY hard one. Let me tell you pride must die to fully embrace complete obedience. Obedience has a negative connotation to it that we need to get rid of. God has our best interest at heart so with that truth the laws of the Bible that we follow (Love God & Love Others) is the best way to live life to the fullest. With the foundation of lawful obedience (sidenote we are ALL sinful. I mean having the right placement of our hearts in accordance to these laws) we can then begin to hear that ringing a little more clearly and even reach for the phone!
"God’s loyal love couldn’t have run out,
his merciful love couldn’t have dried up.
They’re created new every morning.
How great your faithfulness!”
Lamentations 3:22-23 (the Message)
Are you living in full Joy & Grace?
Some days we don’t get crazy calls. Sometimes we are just suppose to show up and love those around us whether it’s the same people you see everyday at work or your family, the call may even seem boring but when we accept God’s love and live in grace even the simple days are beautiful!
I say this because even when we find ourselves in the middle of a slow season whether it is perfectly ordinary or extraordinary, the calls still come.
"Will you talk to me today?” He asks.
